This Weekend! VVFA LIVE (Jasmin Blasco) in London for Digital Design Weekend at the V&A!

Very Very Far Away will be LIVE this weekend, September 23rd and 24th, at the seventh annual Digital Design Weekend at Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This special VVFA performance and workshop will be the first installment in the Sightseer Project, a speculation about a space tether anchored on an artificial island in the Pacific.
Over the course of the weekend, VVFA will set up as a pop-up radio station broadcasting in-person interviews (Garnet Hertz, David Benqué, Joseph Popper), playing back episodes from VVFA podcasts, conducting performances with members of the audience and presenting improvised music by WORMS and other space-themed musical selections.

Very Very Far Away (VVFA) is a public facing research project consisting of a podcast, a workshop and a series of special projects, seeking to re-ignite future ideologies. Its method uses Space Exploration as a lens to examine current ideas and values which may pertain to future societies through technological advances.

With each section, the piece maps a myth of the world's origin with Antarctica at its center.
Through the lens of the ice continent, In From The Cold focuses on environmental shifts, our limited perception of time, and life in extreme environments. A speculation about systemic changes over millennia, the piece contrasts human existence with geological timescales. Antarctica contains a stratigraphic index of geological epochs and preserves bacteria in cryostasis over millions of years. With rapidly rising temperatures caused by climate change, the Antarctic ice sheet is a time-bomb, releasing ancient life forms into a post-human primal ooze.
In From The Cold features Anna Kleiva and was inspired by interviews with D. Graham Burnett, Christina Agapakis, Jana Winderen, Mike Harding and Stephanie Roland.

Jasmin Blasco's In From The Cold (review) at the Antarctic Pavilion
ANTARCTICA PAVILION
The Antarctica Pavilion is hosted in yet another splendid palazzo, on the southern part of the main island of Venice, facing Giudecca. It hosts a number of works by international artists, some of whom had the chance to travel to Antarctica and produce work over there. I enjoy the way works are presented on top of photographic tripods and the overall balance between lyricism and science.
My favorite work is by LA-based artist Jasmin Blasco, a sound piece you can listen to on portable FM radios out in the garden. At a short distance from the solar powered radio transmitter and antenna that feed my radio, I sit near the canal and listen to about fifteen minutes (the total duration is an hour and a quarter) of Blasco’s improvised narration. The artist recounts a story of South Pole exploration in the early 20th Century from the perspective of the leader of the mission, but also from that of bacteria and other life forms trapped in the ice since millennia ago. The work is eerie; sentences find their way through long moments of silence, when one can hear the interference in the radio signal as well as ethereal synth chords. There are many references I connect with, from the short stories of H.P. Lovecraft to John Carpenter’s The Thing and the music of Vangelis. The piece is immersive, and I lose all sense of time and place very quickly; it’s only that annoying feeling I get in Venice, urging me to see more art and meet more people, that pushes me to come back from the Pole.

Classes are scheduled at the Tappan Atelier for 4:00 and 6:00 pm on Sunday, March 5th. Please wear comfortable clothes, and bring a yoga mat or pillow/cushion to sit on the floor. Free street parking is available on Wall Street, one block away.

Jasmin Blasco invited to exhibit at Antarctic Pavilion during the 57th Venice Biennale of Art 2017
Winners of the Antarctic Biennale Open Call are announced
On December 1st during Art Basel Miami Beach the results of the Antarctic Biennale Open Call for young artists were announced. The first prize, an invitation to join a group of distinguished artists, scientists and visionaries on an expedition to the Southern Continent in March 2017, to realize a proposed artwork, went to two applicants – the artist from Japan Sho Hasegawa and the architect from Germany Gustav Dusing.
The names of the 15 finalists, who are invited to exhibit their artwork at the Antarctic Pavilion during the 57th Venice Biennale of Art 2017, were revealed: Bridget Steed (UK); Andreas Lutz (Germany), Stephanie Roland (Belgium), Kim Sheppard (Canada), Jacob Harper (USA), Stefan Laxness (Iceland), Jasmin Blasco (France), Winston Chmielinski (USA), Tom Blake (Australia), Matilde Solbiati (Italy), Louise Oates (UK), Meadhbh O’Connor (Ireland), Valentine Siboni (France), Sybren Renema (Netherlands), Ariel Spadari (Brazil).

Inspired by his visit to the SEYMOUR+ space, Jasmin Blasco has created a site-specific project for visitors to experience.
TRANSMISSION 5 is an audio recording in the form of a guided meditation (RT 5m54s). It is presented via headphones in the reception area of the space. This special proposition is in consonance with Blasco’s project: The First Human Born In Space.
Althought the piece was originally planned to be exhibited from May through July, it has been extended through the end of September by popular demand!

BACKGROUND K_XYZ: The First Human Born In Space is a transmedia project primarily composed of short films written and directed by Jasmin Blasco, produced by Pico Studio in partnership with Creative Migration.
Flipping the pioneer narrative on it’s head, K_XYZ tells the story of the Native Astronaut through a series of fictional journal entries authored by a theoretical entity: The First Human Born In Space.
In a series of transmissions, The First Human Born in Space examines the long term effects of the condition of outer space on the human subject, mind and body. The orbital perspective of the native astronaut provides an alien vantage point on Earth from an environment of pure technological mediation. ABOUT THE ARTIST Jasmin Blasco is a multi-disciplinary artist who approaches time-based media as the site where sound, image, and language conspire to generate the fictional. Through a process of research, abstraction and fiction, his practice stages the individual in problematic narratives. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
Blasco holds a BFA in Music Technology from the California Institute of the Arts. He is a graduate of the Media Design Practices program at Art Center College of Design(MFA). His current research project examines the project of space exploration in its symbolic and cultural dimensions.
With the collaborative research platform The NOISE INDEX, he explores the topicality of informational hunger within a framework that runs counter to expected display strategies. The works Convergence and Horizon have been exhibited in Paris and New York at Cutlog, through Fragmental Museum. He also hosts Speak My Language, a monthly show of curated music on the internet radio collective Dublab.

TILL IT'S GONE is curated by Çelenk Bafra and Paolo Colombo.
On Wednesday January 13th, Jasmin Blasco will participate in "In Conversation With Artists" the first event of TILL IT’S GONE. The exhibition curators will talk about nature and art with some of the participating artists. Reflecting various approaches regarding our world and the environment. The artists will discuss the conceptual framework of the exhibition through their own artistic practices.
The talk will start at 6.30 p.m. at the Istanbul Modern Cinema.
