LAB X is an international artist and producer exchange program, hosted by Bangkok 1899 and Artsadmin.

LAB X is a nine-month artist development program that addresses the profound challenges for artists and producers to work internationally, brought on by politically shifting environments, the ongoing Climate Crisis, and the effects of COVID-19. Bangkok 1899 and Artsadmin have co-designed a holistic cultural and artistic exchange between Thailand and the UK to connect emerging artists, producers, and arts sectors across the two regions.

Bangkok 1899 will host a UK-based artist for two weeks in Bangkok, while Artsadmin will host a Thai-based artist for two weeks at Toynbee Studios in London.

LAB X prioritizes cross-collaboration between artists, disciplines, and contexts. Each artist will be provided with:

  • $1270 fee
  • 2 weeks of studio space
  • Material budget
  • Research and development budget

Care

The initiative will assist a producer in accompanying each artist. This distinctive chance offers on-the-ground logistical and structural assistance, serving as a guardian for the residency, coupled with nurturing guidance and mentorship.

Artist dialogues

The chosen artists will engage in guided virtual sessions designed to facilitate knowledge exchange, providing insights into the social and environmental contexts they are poised to explore. Each collaborating partner will cultivate connections in their respective regions, aligning with their practice and research domains.

Producer talks

Consolidating their learning journey, both producers will bring our networks together through hosting an online public event to disseminate their learnings through the process of international cultural exchange. This will exist online as an evergreen resource for those seeking to build similar projects.

Mentorship

Each organization will be responsible for guiding the artists through the fellowship, offer advice to navigate new contexts, and broker new relationships for the artists. This mentoring structure is an example of cross-sector peer support.

Selection Process

Each organization will nominate a local artist for the exchange. Through rigorous consideration and dialogue, both organizations will identify a new context that nurtures the artists. The artists will be co-selected through a criterion that considers readiness, appropriateness, innovation, and inclusion. The process to select the artists will offer producers the opportunity to build a more sensitive methodology in deciding which artist to champion while prioritizing their communities and its needs.

About Artsadmin
